Let’s take this time to remember all the old songs that were hits back in the day! Songs like “Endless Love” or “Let Me Love You” were big songs back then. And let’s not forget the King of Pop: Michael Jackson. His most influential song: Man in the Mirror or huge hits like Thriller have definitely paved the road for music. Boy bands like N’SYNC, Backstreet Boys or New Kids on The Block have amazing songs that are still being sung today. Songs like “I want it that way” or “Bye bye bye” or “The Right Stuff” are great songs. And what about Cyndi Lauper’s “Time after Time” or Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me”? These songs were huge hits in the 1980s. The band Journey have racked up a bunch of song hits. Their hits include “Don’t Stop Believin'”, “Separate Ways”, “Faithfully” and many more! Many rock songs like “Dream On” by Aerosmith or “Hotel California” by The Eagles and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” are still being played and listened to today. Major hits like “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor or “Last Dance” by Donna Summer and “Dancing Queen” by Abba are still being played today.

Every song ever recorded follows a certain structure that organizes the words and lyrics to form a song. Each song starts off with a verse that looks like a poetic stanza. After the first verse, the chorus follows. The chorus is the element of the song that repeats and conveys the message or theme of the song. It is also called the refrain. The chorus may also follow the pre-chorus. The pre-chorus builds the song and introduces the chorus as a transition from verse to chorus. Following the chorus is the second verse. The second verse has the same melody as the first verse only with different lyrics. After the second verse, the chorus once again repeats itself. And if the song has a pre-chorus, it repeats as well. After the chorus ends, there may be an instrumental break and then the bridge. The bridge is the climax of the song and is only given once. It follows a different melody and is near the end of the song. Some songs may not have a definite bridge and instead repeat the chorus more dramatically to create a different effect. Once the bridge ends, the chorus is repeated slightly different highlighting the singer’s voice. This nears the end of the song.
Along with amazing TV shows, accompanying them are theme songs. Each show or sitcom has a special song, tune, or jingle that introduces the show before each episode. Some of the most popular songs include the 90’s TV Show: “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” starring Will Smith. The lyrics set up the idea of the show and the plot: “Now… this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air” Other popular songs include “Friends” with their song I’ll Be There For You by the Remembrandts. A very famous kid’s TV show: Phineas and Ferb on the disney channel has a catchy song that’s got everybody singing it. Their song is called “Today is gonna be a great day” and was recorded by the band Bowling for Soup which was a little out of the band’s comfort zone. The Simpsons has had great success with their theme song. “The Simpsons Theme” composed by Danny Elfman has been nominated for an Emmy Award. The best shows on television these days have decided not to add a catchy theme song and instead have a short chime following the title sequence, but the greatest shows usually have memorable theme songs to accompany them.
On March 31, the annual Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards was held. It’s an award show that kids vote online to determine the winner of various categories in music, film, and sports and much more! A record breaking number of 220 million votes were used to choose the winners of the Kid’s Choice Awards in twenty categories! Hosted by Will Smith, the night was a light and fun celebration. In past years many audience members and people in the awards’ show are slimed with green, gooey slime and to keep Nickelodeon tradition, this year did not disappointed. Everybody was covered in thick, slippery slime and the whole night was a blast. Celebrities like Chris Colfer, Victoria Justice, Cameron Diaz, and Daniel Radcliffe took place in a slime fight with Will Smith. Justin Bieber won the award for Favorite Male Singer, Big Time Rush won the award for Favorite Music Group, Kristen Stewart won award for Favorite Movie Actress, and Taylor Swift was presented the Big Help award by First Lady, Michelle Obama. Those performing include One Direction, Katy Perry, Keke Palmer, and Max Schneider. There were also special guest appearances by Justin Bieber and Cee Lo Green. It was a fun-filled night and congratulations to all the winners!
All these different bands in the world, old to new, rock or pop, have original and catchy band names. But haven’t you ever wondered why they call themself that? I decided to take a closer look into the history of band names and to find the true meaning to some of the bands. For example, were you aware that the band, Hot Chelle Rae, was named after a girl named Chelle Rae who was apparently “hot”. One Direction got its title during the X Factor live shows because they wanted it to sound good when the X Factor announcer called them to the stage. The Backstreet Boys were named after a flea market in Orlando, Florida. Clever, right? The band Linkin Park chose its name when their lead singer was driving home and had passed the actual Lincoln Park. Panic! At the Disco took its name from the song lyrics of another band. The creative process behind these names is quite interesting once you really think about it. U2 decided to be named after a spy plane from the United States. Coldplay was originally called “Starfish” and a friend’s group was called Coldplay. When they did not want the name anymore, “Starfish” asked if they could use Coldplay instead. It’s fun to see the backgrounds and meanings of all of these bands instead of wondering why they named themself that.

Excited for Spring Break? Well you should be! Another thing you should be excited for are all of the songs you can listen to during spring break! Spring break is the best time to listen to new songs! To start off your week, definitely listen to the song: Glad You Came, by The Wanted. They are a successful British boy band trying to crack America. Another British boy band (mentioned in an earlier post) is One Direction and their new single What Makes You Beautiful is getting massive airplay. Also, Katy Perry’s single, Part of Me, which she first performed at the Grammys earlier this year is an awesome song. To celebrate our youth, listen to Janelle Monae’s song: We Are Young, or Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s song: Young, Wild, and Free. These songs are perfect songs to listen to during your spring vacation. For those who wanna spend their week listening to empowering songs, there are definitely many of those out there. Check out Kelly Clarkson’s song: Stronger, or Domino by Jessie J. For those in love, songs like Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen or Not Over You by Gavin Degraw would be perfect. And for those who just want to party all day and all night for spring break, there are so many songs out there for you to listen to. Listen to Good Feeling by Flo Rida, or International Love by Pitbull and Chris Brown. Have fun!!!
The Nickelodeon Hit TV Show’s members: Kendall Schmidt, Logan Henderson, Carlos Pena, and James Maslow, also known as Big Time Rush, performed at the 2012 Houston Rodeo! Also with them was China Anne McClain, from Disney Channel’s A.N.T. Farm along with her two sisters. Opening the show were the McClain sisters who are all truly talented singers. I was pleasantly surprised by their voice because they were amazing live! Their whole performance was fun and enjoyable and their new album is being released in September. Big Time Rush’s performance definitely exceeded my expectations. The boys were dancing, singing, and having fun on stage which made the audience love their performance. Logan definitely shocked me because he had more solos live and he sounded amazing than he usually does on TV or on their albums. They sang their most popular songs and all there songs were very “up beat”. In my opinion, the performance was a little short and could have been taken to the next level. Overall, both performances were amazing because they were a big surprise. They were actually very talented singers and could deliver a spectacular show live in front of millions of people. They definitely gave it their all and showed their true star quality and talent.
As you may already know, there are many celebrities in the world. Singers, actors, dancers, and comedians all famous for a number of things. But what’s amazing is that most of these stars are very versatile and have many different star qualities and abilities. For example, there are so many movie stars who have transitioned into the music industry as well. Amazing actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow wanted to show her new talent as a musician with songs from her movie, “Country Strong” as well as Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester who had co-starred with Gwyneth Paltrow. Superstars like Jennifer Lopez, who started off as background dancer, and later landed a hit role as Selena, which launched her music career. Zooey Deschanel, the fun-loving actress, is a singer in an indie rock band. She also sings short songs and incorporates her love in music in her TV Show: New Girl. Before Lindsay Lohan’s reputation took a turn for the worse, she was a young star in Hollywood who started off with acting. After recording songs for a movie soundtrack, she, like many others, decided to record her own solo albums. Another young star, Hilary Duff, had showed us her talent on the big screen, as well as her talent on the radio. Hilary Duff scored three platinum albums with her music career. All these stars: actresses, dancers, and musicians wrapped into one.
